The Level 2 Award in Basic Life Support and Safe Use of an Automated External Defibrillator (QCF) is a regulated and nationally recognised qualification and provides learners with the opportunity to develop their skills and knowledge in basic life support and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) usage in emergency situations.

With an estimated 60,000 out of hospital cardiac arrests occurring every year in the UK alone every minute without CPR and defibrillation reduces a casualty’s chance of survival by 10%.

Sudden cardiac arrest is one of the UK’s biggest killers, and yet statistics show that most of the British public are unaware of the life-saving difference they can make by performing CPR and defibrillation.

The QA Level 2 Award in Basic Life Support and Safe Use of an Automated External Defibrillator (QCF) qualification has been designed to provide candidates with the skills needed to administer safe, prompt and effective basic life support and use an AED safely in emergency situations.

This qualification is valid for a period of 1 year, within which time the candidate will need to re-take the qualification and assessments in order to remain qualified.

Entry requirements:

In order to complete this qualification candidates must:

  • Be a minimum of 16 years of age
  • There are no other formal entry requirements but to benefit from the learning we advise that candidates have a minimum of Level 1 in literacy or numeracy or equivalent

Delivery & assessment methods:

The QA Level 2 Award in Basic Life Support and Safe Use of an Automated External Defibrillator (QCF) is delivered over a half day classroom based programme incorporating practical exercises.

Assessment is an ongoing process throughout the course by using questions and answer sessions and practical assessments. There is no written examination for this qualification.

Course content:

Candidates will develop the knowledge and practical competencies required to administer basic life support procedures and how to safely use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED).

Units covered:

During the course candidates will cover the following topics:

Unit 1: Basic Life Support and Safe Use of an Automated External Defibrillator

Chain of survival, incident and casualty assessment, primary assessment, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), using an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), recovery position

Unit 1 is assessed by questions and answers and practical assessments throughtout the course.

What next?

The QA Level 2 Award in Basic Life Support and Safe Use of an Automated External Defibrillator (QCF) may be used towards other qualifications at the same and higher level, plus aid career progression in a relevant profession.
